[June 2021 photo] Bonin's Folly - In
early April 2021 L.A. City Councilman Mike Bonin set
off a wave of criticism in Pacific Palisades by
calling for a "feasibility analysis" into using this
parking lot (as well as two other beach parking lots
and LAX) to provide temporary emergency shelter for
the homeless while work is done on long-term and
interim housing solutions. The Will Rogers
site was "under consideration for a cabin community
OR safe camping." On May 26, 2021 the City
Council voted 13-1 and one abstaining to proceed
with the feasibility study. The Pacific
Palisades Community Council led opposition to
Bonin's proposal. Additionally Bonin, who is
up for re-election in 2022, was served with a recall
notice on June 15. On Aug. 10 the City
Administrative Office recommended the City should
not pursue most of the options Bonin had
advanced. (more)
