_____________

Mare Z Dotes

3 cups Oats
1 cup Brown Sugar
1/4 cup Boiling Water
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 cup Flour
1 cup Butter (or) Oleo
1 teaspoon Soda

Mix together oats, sugar & flour, add melted oleo and mix well.  Dissolve soda in boiling water & add to mixture.  Form dough into a roll & chill thoroughly.  Slice thin & bake in moderate oven 5 to 10 minutes.

I sometimes just drop spoonfuls of the fresh mix on the cookie sheet and bake.  Sometimes I add 1 tablespoon of vanilla or cinnamon.

Grandma sent this here written out on the back of a Aug. 2, 1980 Oakland Tribune article "Eating bugs: termite pilaf, bee won ton" with a note: "Just to keep you up to date – other culinary hints on the other side..."  The name of the cookie comes from the 1943 novelty song "Mairzy Doats. (>)"
