July 29-August 1, 2009 -- The Bowen Basin in Central Queensland is the largest coal reserve in Australia.  According to the Bowen Basin Mining Communities Research Exchange, in 2006 there were 34 operational coal mines extracting over 100 million tonnes annually.  Blackwater, on the Capricorn Highway, proclaims itself "the coal capital of Queensland."  A good place to learn about the coal industry is the Blackwater International Coal Centre, which is sponsored by various mining companies and other groups and opened about a year ago.

Curragh Mine, 14 km northwest of Blackwater, produces 6.5 million tonnes of export coal and 2.5 million tones of domestic coal per year.  The Dawson mine, a joint venture between Anglo Coal and Mitsui Coal, is further south near Moura.

Meanwhile several hundred kilometers to the east...

August 9, 2009 -- Coal at the Port of Gladstone is ready to be shipped overseas.  About 85 percent of Queensland's coal is exported.
