August 9, 2009 -- Some of the coal provides domestic power.  The Gladstone Power Station is the largest coal fired power station in Queensland with six generating units and a capacity of 1,680 megawatts.  It started producing power in 1976.  In 1994 the Queensland government sold the station to a joint venture including Rio Tinto Aluminum.  About half its power goes to smelting and half to the grid.

The Gladstone area has a significant amount of industry, including Rio Tinto's Yarwun Aluminium Refinery.  The U.S.$1.8 billion Yarwun 2 expansion project "will more than double annual production, increasing alumina output by two million tonnes to 3.4 million tonnes by 2011."
