Desert Mistletoe, also called
Mesquite
Mistletoe (Phoradendron californicum). The
plant is
hemiparasitic, meaning it does some of its own photosynthesis.
According to Wikipedia, the white to reddish fruits are edible if
growing on mesquite, ironwood or catclaw. The Phainopepla (Phainopepla nitens) eats
the fruits but excretes the seeds, thus helping to spread the
plant. See: Glenn E. Walsberg. 1974. "Digestive
adaptations of Phainopeple Nitens
associated with the eating of mistletoe berries." The Condor, no 77,
1975, p.
