March
17, 2018 - Millpara Avocados on Far
North Road in Waiharara, north of
Kaitaia.
According to New Zealand Avocado, which
combines the New Zealand Avocado Growers'
Association and Avocado Industry Council
Ltd, "Seed was brought to New Zealand in the
early 1900s and since this time the industry
has developed to become New Zealand's third
largest fresh fruit export." (Avocados
are the fifth largest horticultural
export). From 75 to 80% of New Zealand
avocados are exported to Australia. In
June 2014 the Ministry for Primary
Industries and New Zealand Avocado launched
a five-year program "New Zealand Avocados Go
Global," objectives of which include
expanding exports in Southeast Asia and
"achieving greater yields and more
consistent biennial avocado production
nationally." Specific aims are to
"triple productivity to 12 tonnes per
hectare and quadruple industry returns to
$280 million per annum by 2023." New
Zealanders like their avocados too,
consuming a record 1.9 million trays of
avocados in 2016-17. In addition the
stocks in supermarkets, in Northland one
finds them for sale in farmers markets and
sometimes in small bags at petrol stations.
