Dec 1987

Dear Ron & Hazel,

This year in August, we took a "do nothing" vacation at Cabo San Lucas, Baja, California.  Found this nameless tree out in the desert near the coast.  It had just burst into bloom as a tropical storm had passed through the preceeding week.  What a weirdly beautiful sight this lichen covered tree was with its white bark and pinkish flowers—all in temperatures of over 100F.

We're fine doing the same type of things we've done in years of yore.  Alex our youngest is a junior at Stanford in Biology.  Miguel is now a grad student at Cornell in New York in Plant Pathology.  Eric is presently at home with us.  How have you been?  Fine I hope.  Best wishes for 1988

Dear Mom,

I suppose you are thinking the reverse doesn't look anything like the leafy green squat bush I sent you a slide of. I think this is the same thing—It was growing up the coast a bit and about 2 blocks inland versus the other one being rite about the sea and rite at the tip of Baja. Found the combination of lichens, flowers and 100
° + heat an interesting one. I suppose the area gets wintertime fog—Certainly not a lot of rain. We found cactus, elephant trees, and agaves growing near the sight of this photos. The other sight had a few more herby things about.

We're not doing a lot for Christmas this year. No shopping for presents for us or relatives (Dont Cry). I got you a subscription to Pacific Hort. and will get you a membership to the Botanic garden if this isn't the year that I'm not supposed to get one (was it last year that they said not to get one or was that 2 years ago??) No memory anymore. Please forward the Bill if you get one!!! Its a bit late for me to write them and besides ...  [page 1 of several]
